Immediate actions

Check for danger to yourself, the casualty and others.

Check for a response.
- 3
Send for help: call Triple Zero (000), notify the Control Room and get the first-aid kit/AED.

Open the airway and check breathing.
- 5
If the person is not breathing normally, start CPR: 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
- 6
Attach the AED as soon as available, follow its prompts and continue until handover.

RECOGNISE
Signs and triggers
- Collapse, unresponsiveness or abnormal breathing
- Chest pain, severe bleeding or serious injury
- Seizure, stroke signs or severe allergic reaction
- Any sudden life-threatening illness or deterioration

DO NOT
Actions that increase the risk
- Do not enter an electrically, chemically or physically unsafe area.
- Do not leave the casualty alone unless necessary to summon help.
- Do not give food, drink or medication unless directed by an appropriate professional/procedure.
- Do not move the casualty unless danger remains or the 000 operator directs it.
- Do not stop CPR until normal breathing returns, you cannot continue, or help takes over.

SUPPORTING RESPONSE
Role-based actions
First aider
- Apply DRSABCD within training and follow the 000 operator.
- Protect privacy while maintaining observation and care.
Control Room / coordinator
- Confirm 000, send the AED/first-aid resources and provide a site escort.
- Keep the access route clear and record key times.
Ambulance liaison
- Meet responders at the nominated entry and guide them directly to the casualty.
- Provide known hazards, medical information offered by the casualty and treatment given.

EMERGENCY-SERVICES HANDOVER
Information to provide
- Exact location and safest access route
- What happened and when the person was last seen well
- Response, airway and breathing status
- CPR/AED use, shocks advised and key times
- Bleeding, injuries, known exposure or electrical hazard
- Known medical information voluntarily provided and first aid given

WHEN THE IMMEDIATE DANGER HAS PASSED
Recovery and reporting
- Support the casualty and witnesses and protect personal information.
- Restock and check first-aid/AED equipment.
- Record the incident and first-aid response under site requirements.
- Preserve relevant scene information where a workplace incident occurred.
- Review access, communication and responder arrival performance.
